Transforming Education and Training to enable Africancountries to achieve sustainable development

 |
Who we are and what we do |
A network of policy-makers, practitioners and researchers |
| The Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) is first and foremost a forum for policy dialogue, composed of all the 54 Ministers of Education in Africa and 16 development partners. It was established in 1988 initially as a framework for better coordination among development agencies. |

| Our Achievements |
A catalyst for education reform |
An independent evaluation of ADEA carried out by Universalia Management Group in 2010, noted that ADEA had delivered results at the output and outcome levels that largely exceeded the expectations voiced by donor representatives |

| Implementation of the 2012 Triennale Recommendations |
| The 2012 Triennale recommendations are predicated on the assumptions and understanding that the ownership and responsibility for their implementation rests with each African country. The role of ADEA and its partners is to support the initiatives by each country in the implementation process. |
|
| ADEA’s 2nd Medium-Term Strategic Plan (2013-2017) |
| In the next five years ADEA will reinforce its comparative advantage in education development by implementing its second medium-term strategic plan (2013-2017) |

| ADEA’s Approach to Policy Dialogue |
A forum for policy dialogue on education in Africa |
Policy dialogue is an essential component in ADEA’s efforts to assist African countries engaged in the development of education and training systems. It conducts policy dialogue through the following mechanisms: |
The Triennale: The Triennale (formerly Biennale) on Education and Training in Africa is the most important educational event in the region, in terms of both participation and content of the discussions, bringing together in a single venue all the stakeholders working on behalf of education in Africa. The meeting is attended by ministers of education and training of all countries in Africa, senior representatives of bilateral and multilateral development agencies, academics and practitioners from foundations, research networks, NGOs and civil society organizations. The main purpose of the Triennales, which are the high point in the Association's activities, is to encourage and foster frank and open dialogue on a priority theme relating to the development of education. ADEA has held 8 biennales and one Triennale which was held in 2012. Since 1991, the themes of these thematic events have always been identified by the Ministers to meet emerging challenges in education.

Working Groups |
ADEA's Working Groups provide ADEA with a unique perspective
on specific issues. They undertake exploratory work and examine ways
to improve the performance in their specific domain. Although the Working
Groups are all structured and managed in a different way they all carry
out research, capacity building, advocacy and networking activities.
|
|
| Our current Prospects and Challenges |
| Until a decade ago the development outlook for Africa was depressing because of a litany of problems which ranged from wars, diseases, to violent strife and abysmal poverty and low rate of economic growth. In spite of the global economic and financial crisis in 2006-2008 African economies have been undergoing unprecedented growth. |
|
| Partnership |
A partnership between ministries of education and development
agencies |
The implementation of both the recommendations of the 2012 Triennale and the Medium-Term Strategic Plan require partnership. |
|
| Our History |
| The Association for the Development of Education in Africa came into existence following the recommendations of a World Bank study in 1988. |
|
| How we are financed |
| ADEA’s programs and operating costs are funded through its basket fund and restricted funds for specific activities. ADEA’s members contribute an annual membership fee which goes into the basket together with other non-earmarked funding. |
