The Working Group on Distance Education and Open Learning (WGDEOL) was created in 1997 to help ministries of education, training institutions, and NGOs in Africa improve access to, quality of, and equity in education, and, in particular, to strengthen the capacity of the education system.

Capacity Building Workshop for ODL Practitioners, Mauritius, December 03 & 04 2008

This intensive 2 day workshop is organized by the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) Working Group on Distance Education and Open Learning (WGDEOL) in collaboration with the University of Mauritius (SideCAP project). It will focus on Capacity building of DEOL practitioners from African countries. It will address through keynote presentations, case studies and interactive sessions four important and topical aspects of Open and Distance Learning:

  • Quality Assurance in DEOL
  • IPR Issues in ODL
  • Development of national ODL Policy Framework
  • Effective use of Open Educational Resources and DEOL Authoring with Open Source Tools

Advocacy Workshop on DEOL, Mauritius, April 10 - 11 2008

The objective of the Advocacy Workshop is to assist policy makers in African Ministries of Education to embed DEOL into their activities, so that the latter may provide policy directions to stakeholders to tap the potential of DEOL to reach out to their students in line with Education for All (EFA) goals. The workshop will enable senior decision makers from African Ministries of Education to network and to develop a need-based draft framework for promotion of DEOL in their respective countries.

RESAFAD Project:
Francophone countries : The first phase of a major project carried out by the Réseau Francophone de Formation à Distannce (RESAFAD), "Enseignement à distance et apprentissage libre et perfectionnement des enseignants et formateurs - pour des strategies globales et intégrées. (Francophone countries)" is over. (More information, in French language only...)

The RESAFAD is presently embarking on the second phase which comprises essentially a Workshop with the major stakeholders and policy makers including the participating experts, representatives of international and; francophone organizations including UNESCO, IIEP, AUF, AIF and the representatives of multilateral projects and initiatives including for instance the Commonwealth of Learning and the World Bank among others. The Final Phase will comprise a comprehensive publication.

Anglophone countries : The Anglophone version of the above project, albeit to a lesser scale, is also complete. This project was carried out by Principal Investigators from three countries respectively: Mauritius, Tanzania and the Republic of South Africa.
