The 19th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers and the Nassau Declaration

The 19th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM) is a triennial meeting of education ministers across the Commonwealth, and provides a forum to engage in meaningful dialogue on education. It was held in Nassau, The Bahamas from 22-26 June 2015 and convened under the theme “Quality Education for Equitable Development: Performance, Paths and Productivity”.

The Conference was opened by the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister of The Bahamas. H. E. Kamalesh Sharma, Commonwealth Secretary-General, addressed the conference at the opening ceremony. The host Minister, Hon. Jerome K Fitzgerald, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, chaired the conference.

The main outcome of this international Conference was a Ministerial Declaration – better known as The Nassau Declaration – agreed by all Commonwealth Ministers of Education, which highlighted the major topics and issues (e.g. early childhood education, access to technology, gender equity, the key role of parents, teachers and civil society) discussed at the 19th CCEM as well as the main remedial initiatives proposed (e.g. Lifelong Learning, Policy Frameworks, Scholarships and Research Collaborations).
