Inter-Country Quality Node on Peace Education draws work plan for 2014

The ADEA Inter-Country Quality Node for Peace Education (ICQN/PE) held a technical meeting in Nairobi from November 26 to 29, 2013, for the ICQN’s focal points in African ministries of education. The meeting firmly established the ICQN as a mechanism for intergovernmental coordination and collaboration. It attracted some 40 participants, from Botswana, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Liberia, Mozambique, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda.

A number of experiences with peace education programs were shared:

  • The experiences of Botswana, Botswana, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Liberia, Mozambique, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda concerning the integration of peace education programs were presented;
  • Kerstin Tebbe, deputy director of the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE), presented a tool for the design and implementation of education programs in contexts of conflict;
  • The University of Nairobi’s Department of Education in Emergencies presented its program of “capacity building for peace-through-education initiatives”.
  • Production of a news bulletin on peace education by the ICQN was also discussed.

Lastly, the meeting set the structure of the ICQN and drew up a plan of activity for the 2014-2017 period. The latter calls for the ICQN to produce a news bulletin, make official appointments of its focal points, create national sections, formulate guidelines on integration of peace education into education programs, and develop monitoring and evaluation tools.
