Subject: Invitation to the Ministerial Conference on ‘Education in countries in crisis or post-conflict’ Mombasa, Kenya, June 2-4, 2004 This meeting has been initiated by the ADEA Bureau of Ministers and the ADEA Steering Committee. This is a joint ADEA/Commonwealth Secretariat Conference which is being graciously hosted by the Government of Kenya. The Conference venue will be Mombasa. The conference will bring together Ministers of Education and Training from countries of the Central African and West African sub-regions as well as the Ministers of the ADEA Bureau of Ministers. The Ministers may be accompanied by their Permanent Secretaries and high level senior officials. The conference will draw attention to and devote more thought to a subject that is crucial for the development of education in Africa and offer education ministries, their development partners and education specialists an opportunity to exchange experiences and develop a knowledge-base of good practices in a field that is relatively new, and hence insufficiently explored. More specifically, the conference will seek to: foster awareness and commitment on the part of key actors with respect to the educational challenges arising from conflicts in Africa; share what has been learned from the education strategies, programs and projects developed in conflict situations, from the standpoint of both national policy and external aid; promote partnerships in analytical work, capacity building, financing and project development in favor of education in situations of crisis and conflict.
