Advancing Girls’ Secondary Education towards SDG 4 and 5

Challenge description:

Homa Bay county is one of the counties in Kenya following the new political system of devolved governments. After the last general election of 2013, a young upcoming leader by the name Hon. Gladys Atieno Wanga was elected women representative(https://www.facebook.com/GladysWanga2/?ref=page_internal). Myself as an individual, a teacher in high school shared a few ideas including girl mentoring program that was to target girls with Homa Bay county, a county that has got one of the worst indicators in HIV-AIDS prevalence within the country if not globally. The county not only has one of the highest death rates among the school going age but also the among the highest dropout rates in the country. It is with this in mind that we approached the office of the W/Rep and a few other stakeholders to launch a program to target high school students especially girls that are having the highest vulnerability to HIV-AIDS infections, early pregnancies, and ultimate drop out from schools. This program has also been shared to an upcoming leader Rosemary Odinga to launch one within Kibera Slum of Nairobi-Kenya. The program theme includes to Instil discipline and self-respect among the high school students which are key to success. Secondly, Self respect= Abstinence from sex before marriage. Thirdly, Girls are urged to stay positive and persistent until they succeed. In one of the local dailies quote '“Mama County Says” is my flagship girl child mentorship program, which was launched in March this year by Mrs Ida Odinga and the second summit will take place on September 12 with Dr Susan Kidero as the chief guest." This was March 2014 when the program was launched and has been going and targets to reach all the eight sub-counties of Homa Bay counties. Myself as an individual I am now targeting another group for the campaign that will promote this goal further that is targeting motorcycle riders ' the so-called Boda Boda riders'. If I get funds I will launch a campaign amongst the youths and the riders men to spearhead what we refer to us I REFUSE TO HAVE SEX WITH HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS- let the girls go to school.
