Africa is rapidly changing. New demands, contexts, and opportunities are shaping
learning needs and learning patterns. Alternative modes of learning, including
non-formal education, have a critical role to play in overcoming the challenges
that cannot be met by formal schooling alone.
The Working Group on Non-Formal Education (WGNFE) seeks to develop the
alternative and non-formal dimensions of learning within a holistic educational
system. Explore the WGNFE website to find more about our strategies, programmes
and partners. The website provides direct access to our features, communiqués,
publications, reports and information on our upcoming events and activities.

The Literacy Initiative for
Empowerment (LIFE) |
|
The Literacy
Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE) was launched at UNESCO
headquarters (Paris) from 21-22 July 2005. At the LIFE meeting, the
ADEA Executive Secretary, Mamadou Ndoye was invited to give an
overview of the planned studies and research on the theme of
literacy for the forthcoming ADEA Biennial (March 2005, Gabon).
Under the coordination of the ADEA Working Group of Non Formal
Education in collaboration with UIE and BREDA, these studies will
focus on the Analysis and Assessment of Effective Literacy Policies
and Programs in Sub Saharan Africa for Socio-Economic Development.
This will involve looking at issues such as Literacy and
globalization; capacity development and management; costs and
financing, cultural and language policies, the learning process and
pedagogical choices, equivalencies and certification,
decentralization etc. Presentations and discussions around the
Literacy thematic at the ADEA Biennial will no doubt feed into the
Literacy Initiative (LIFE) which is meant to be a partnership for a
programme of action in support of the achievement of Education for
All and a key operational mechanism to increase literacy learning
opportunities within the framework of the United Nations Literacy
Decade (UNLD).

Education For All Global Monitoring Report Online Consultation |
|
The Education for All Global Monitoring Report (GMR)
team is organising an online consultation based on the outline of
the forthcoming report on literacy.
The objective is to assure that the report reflects the range of
views, concerns and policy experience prevailing in the field of
literacy. The outcomes will inform the development of the GMR, to be
released in late 2005.
Partners with an expertise in the field of literacy and development
are encouraged to
fill in the short survey that will enable the technicians to
choose the best platform for running the consultation.
A second message will be sent once the outline is posted on the web.
The consultation will begin on 10 March for a two-week period. It
will be moderated by Dr. Agneta Lind, literacy expert and special
adviser for the 2006 report.
