During the 42nd Session of the ADEA Steering Committee, its new Chairperson, His Excellency, Prof. Dr. Ashraf El Shihy, Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research of Egypt, offered to host a continental validation meeting in Cairo. This meeting is the culmination of consultation process that has taken place in the five regions of the continent. A conceptual framework and methodological approach was adopted and implemented. In the participatory approach, five consultative regional conferences were held in:

  • Libreville, Gabon for Central Africa (30th - 31st  May), on sub-theme 4 - Building peace and global citizenship through education;
  • Dakar, Senegal for West Africa (13th – 14th  June), on sub-theme 2 - Promoting science, mathematics, and information and communication technology;
  • Rabat, Morocco for North Africa (13th – 14th June), on sub-theme 2 - Promoting science, mathematics, and information and communication technology;
  • Luanda, Angola for Southern Africa (27th – 28th July), on sub-theme 3 - Implementing education for African cultural renaissance and pan-African ideals;
  • Nairobi, Kenya for the East Africa (30th August – 1st September), on sub-theme 1 - Implementing education and lifelong learning for sustainable development.

The results of discussions conducted at these regional conferences as well as several contributions - in the form of studies and research reports presented on each theme – were collected by thematic coordinators and are currently being reviewed for the development of thematic syntheses. This is precisely the reason the continental conference in Cairo, Egypt will focus on the assessment and the results of all this preparatory work prior to the Triennale in Marrakesh, Morocco (15th – 17th March 2017).
