Martin Gustafsson is a researcher in the Department of Economics at Stellenbosch University, where he earned his Master’s degree in 2006 and his PhD in 2014. His doctoral research focused on the role of education in economic development.

He is a member of the RESEP (Research on Socio-Economic Policy) team but is based in Pretoria, where he serves as an advisor to South Africa’s Department of Basic Education. His expertise spans the application of economics to education planning, the development of school funding policies, the economics of teacher remuneration, the demographics of schooling systems, and cross-country analyses of education policy and performance.
